Luckily, things have changed a lot in the last 40 years. In fact, I think the only state in which you could definitely get gay marriage in just ten years ago was California. Today, 9 of the 50 states (Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, Washington, ten if you count the District of Columbia). Together, they make up 15.791% percent of the population. Considering Delaware will join this club less than a month from now and Minnesota and Rhode Island will join two months from now, that brings the population percentage up to 18.132%. There's obviously still some ways to go, but considering most of my generation considers what sexuality you are as akin to what hand you favor, I'd say that 50 years from now, the gay rights movement will be seen in the same light we see the Civil Rights Movement today.
